Guapos: A Wine Label Masterpiece by Cesar Moura

Blending Modern Design and Nordic Tendencies in Wine Labeling

Guapos, a wine label design by Cesar Moura, is a unique blend of modernity, difference, and quality. Inspired by the serene landscapes of Northern Portugal and the vineyards' altitude, this design combines a modern touch, an intellectual Nipponese approach, and the cleanliness of Nordic tendencies. This article delves into the inspiration, unique properties, realization technology, and challenges faced in creating this award-winning design.

The design's unique properties lie in its foundation: family. Moura's challenge was to create two different brands sharing the same corporate identity, binding them together. This connection is evident when the bottles are aligned, as the top-edge of the label forms a wavy line, symbolizing the altitude where the vineyards grow.

The design realization technology involved meticulous planning. The choice of fine waterproof paper, the unique edge of each label, and the varnish on the letters all contribute to the design's elegance. When held by the consumer, the materials and final touches make the bottle stand out.

The design specifications include a 260mm x 88mm offset print with a special edge and varnish. The labels, designed to work as a group when displayed inline on a shelf, create an image reminiscent of Portuguese landscapes. Each label has its own personality, with different colors representing different grape varieties, and finishing touches that bring the label to life.

The design project started in December 2016 and finished in March 2017. Research for the design involved looking beyond the Portuguese wine label to countries like Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia, known for their quality wine labels. Internet research on blogs, Behance, and worldwide portfolios helped Moura develop this unique work.

Creating a collection where all the bottles interact with each other was the main challenge for this project. The design aims to fuse modern design and Nordic tendencies in art, portraying the wine's country of origin. Each edge cut represents the altitude at which each vineyard grows, with a respective color for the grape variety. When all the bottles are aligned inline, they form the shapes of the landscapes of Northern Portugal, the region that gives birth to this wine.

This design won the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2018, a testament to its creative and professional excellence. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and a remarkable level of excellence.
